Darwin Awards is a competition, named after evolutionary theorist Charles Darwin, in which awards are given to people who “ who ensure the long-term survival of the human race by removing themselves from the gene pool in a sublimely idiotic fashion”.
Wendy Northcutt, who runs darwinawards.com and has stated five requirements for her Darwin Award:
1. The nominee must be dead or rendered sterile.
2. The nominee’s foolishness must be unique and sensational.
3. The nominee must have injured or killed themselves, rather than a third party.
4. The nominee must be at least past the legal driving age and mentally healthy.
